Orange Coast College has been named a 2022 “Champion for Excelling in Equitable Course Placement in Black Math Enrollment” by the Campaign for College Opportunity in recognition of supporting 100 percent of black students to enroll directly into transfer-level math coursework.

OCC will be recognized at the organization’s inaugural award installation ceremony, set for May 12 from 4-6 p.m. at the RedBird in Downtown Los Angeles. A representative from OCC will join Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, and other California Community College honorees to accept the award on the College’s behalf.

“OCC is proud to be a leading community college in supporting students in achieving their college goals through equitable course placement,” says President Angelica Suarez. “In particular, we are thrilled to be recognized as an institution that is ensuring Black students are supported in their transfer-level coursework.”

Since the passage of AB 705 in 2017, which requires that a community college district or college maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and math within a one-year timeframe, California’s 116 community colleges have taken steps to increase access to credit-bearing courses across all racial and ethnic groups. This spring, the Campaign for College Opportunity recognized 40 community colleges for their work in eliminating remedial education courses at their institutions and ensuring students enroll and succeed in college-level courses.
