Certification Requirements

According to Orange Coast College Academic Senate, certification is required to teach in online formats at Orange Coast College. The Advanced Course is based on the training and guidelines from the California Virtual College cvc.edu. 

 


IIC Training for Online Instruction

Training Options

  • Synchronous (live online):  Changing Courses: Teaching Live Online (CCTLO) is required
  • Asynchronous (Fully online):  Pedagogy of Teaching Online (PTO)
  • Hybrid: Any combination of face-to-face, synchronous or asynchronous
    • If hybrid, is any portion of the course asynchronous :   Pedagogy of Teaching Online (PTO)
    • If hybrid, no asynchronous instruction, but has synchronous:  Changing Courses: Teaching Live Online (CCTLO) is required

** If you take the PTO course, you can teach any modality at OCC.

Changing Courses: Basics of Teaching Live Online - CCTO (formerly ERT)

This course is designed to train an instructor on teaching live online (synchronously). This course includes the basic characteristics of a synchronous online course and provides insight into creating an inclusive and equitable student experience. This course will enable the instructor to develop virtual communication and content presentation skills, reduce barriers to student success, create accessible course materials, and define the positive characteristics of an effective synchronous instructor. (8-10 hours)


Pedagogy of Teaching Online: Skills for a Fully-Online Teacher - PTO (formerly STLO)

This workshop covers preparing and teaching a more inclusive, equitable, and accessible, fully online, asynchronous course, including available tools to promote student success. This course will provide insight into creating accessible online content and engaging experiences by using the current principles, tools, and resources available in online design. The goal is to provide our students with a substantive course, easy to navigate and provides tools to support increased instructor/student communication & interaction while promoting integrity, all tools for student success. (16-20 hours)

Advanced Course Design: Taking Online Courses to Next Level (Advanced STLO)
  • Includes Universal Course Design & OEI Rubric alignment

  • Prerequisite:  Pedagogy of Teaching Online

    • Option #1: For any instructor who took the STLO course before the switch to virtual for pandemic

    • Option #2:  For any instructor who did not complete the STLO in Canvas

This new course is designed to take the content taught in the Pedagogy of Teaching Online and apply its concepts to design a complete course designed to include advanced elements of universal course design and align CVC Design Rubric requirements. This course will include basic training and application of DesignPLUS.

A completed course reviewed by OAB and local POCR committee to be submitted to CVC for eligibility to be included in the California Community College Course Exchange.
