The Instructional Innovation Center (IIC)

The Instructional Innovation Center (IIC) is a part of the OCC Library and Learning Support Center. Since 2016 when the IIC team first implemented Canvas, they have trained users and provided support for Canvas and all associated tools. Today the IIC plays an important role in online learning, teaching, and using Canvas. 

At Orange Coast College you are not alone when it comes to online education. The IIC has an awesome group of people who can help you with everything Canvas. Everyone on the staff has different training and degrees. While we may have our own specialties, you can contact any of us, and we will be happy to help you. John TaylorJOHN TAYLOR, Ph.D. (Dean of Library and Learning Support)

John joined OCC in February 2017, coming from Lassen College where he had similar responsibilities on a smaller scale. He earned his Ph.D. in 2009 in Philosophy and Religion and enjoyed teaching in that department at Lassen College. To assist the implementation of Canvas at Lassen College, John built a course in Canvas for faculty to take on how to integrate the library resources available at Lassen into online and hybrid classes. He has also worked at Long Beach City College among others and has experience implementing technology to improve services. He enjoys working with the IIC team to continue the tradition of success. 


Eric Wilson ERIC WILSON, Ph.D. (Educational Technology Trainer) 

Eric has been with the Coast District for over 20 years as a trainer and part-time faculty. Eric was involved with online learning from the beginning of 2002 and has worked with over 2,000 faculty and staff. Eric has been involved with several transitions, including WebCT, Blackboard Vista, and Blackboard Learn. One of his favorite events is developing and producing different educational boot camps which are very popular throughout the District. Also, he is a volunteer for @One and OEI (Online Education Initiative) and is a certified course and ADA reviewer for OEI. In January 2022, Eric successfully completed his Doctorate at Grand Canyon University in the area of Technology Integration with Education, Psychology. In summary, an educational psychologist.

Barbara CooperBARBARA COOPER (Faculty-Ret. STLO/ERT Facilitator)

Barbara has worked over 42 years at OCC as a classified worker, faculty, administrator and finally as a professor of Food Service Management. She was a major player in the Canvas implementation and served as the Online Faculty Coordinator for multiple terms. 

Since retiring, Barbara has returned to OCC to teach the STLO and to support the IIC team.

 Sue Harlan

SUE HARLAN, MS ED (Educational Technologies Associate) 

Sue joined the OCC Instructional Innovation Center in February 2016, after 20 years of teaching, and 10 as a technology instructor in the Irvine Unified School District. She has much experience in classroom instruction and educational technology. Most recently Susan earned her Masters in Instructional Design from San Diego State University. She enjoys sharing her knowledge of instruction and technology with our OCC.
